Andrew Kay started his 40 year career in the entertainment industry as a professional actor prior to working for Government in arts funding, then as General Manager of Australia’s major theatre company (Melbourne Theatre Company) before moving to the world of rock and roll as Managing Director of one of Australia’s major concert promoters. In 1995 he set up shop as an independent Producer and Promoter. In 1996, his first commercial venture was the hugely successful 3 year world tour of pianist David Helfgott whose life was depicted in the film Shine.
In 2003 he created and continues to produce the phenomenal Soweto Gospel Choir, the five-time Grammy winning, Emmy winning (in association with U2) and Academy Award nominee ( Wall E) choir from South Africa.
Together with his theatrical co-producer Liza McLean, Andrew produced the world premiere of Alfred Hitchcock’s North By Northwest and has toured productions including the Old Vic/ Brooklyn Academy production of Richard III, Waiting for Godot starring Ian McKellen, and The Graduate starring Jerry Hall. Andrew has also presented international productions The Hollow Crown starring Derek Jacobi, Diana Rigg, Ian Richardson and Donald Sindon, The Importance of Being Earnest starring Patricia Routlege and Talking Heads starring Dame Maggie Smith and Brenda Blethyn.
In Australia, Andrew has produced and toured productions including The Blue Room, Masterclass, The 39 Steps and Secret Bridesmaids Business and Calamity Jane. Since 1996, Andrew has been one of Australia’s major producers of children’s theatre including his current portfolio which includes Bluey’s Big Play, Operation Ouch Live both in Australia and on the West End as well as Steve Backshall’s Deadly 60 . Previous children shows include multiple tours of Hi-5 in Australia and UK, Bananas in Pyjamas, Cat in The Hat, Giggle and Hoot, Hairy Maclary, The Fairies, LazyTown, ABC Christmas Spectaculars Horrible Histories – Awful Egyptians and Barmy Britain, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and the internet sensation Dan TDM Live. In music, Andrew has presented artists of renown including Kathleen Battle, Yehudi Menuhin, Wynton Marsalis, Paco Pena, Ibrahim Ferrer, The Buena Vista Social Club, Nigel Kennedy as well as the brass bands including Grimethorpe Colliery Band and Austria’s Mnozil Brass.
In 2015, Andrew co-created with Nic Doodson The Choir of Man which continues to thrill audiences around the world.
In dance, Andrew has toured Pilobolus, Complexions and Les Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo. He is the Producer of the world’s most acclaimed Tango show Tango Fire which has had seven sell-out seasons at London’s Peacock Theatre in London.
Other attractions and artists presented by Andrew include QI Live starring Stephen Fry and Alan Davies, the symphonic version of Monty Python’s Life of Brian Not The Messiah starring Eric Idle, An Evening with Kevin McCloud, The Goodies Live starring Tim Brooke Taylor and Graeme Garden and two Australian tours of Louis Theroux Live on Stage. Andrew served as President of Australia’s peak industry body for the entertainment industry, “Live Performance Australia” for over 15 years and in 2016, he was awarded the Order of Australia for significant service to the entertainment industry.
